Anaesthesiology Personality Index
What is the “average” personality of an anaesthesiologist? How do those matching into the specialty compare to that average? Does their personality become more like the average through the course of their training?
Research Protocol
-
Who
The study begins with a demographic survey looking at general characteristics of faculty and trainee anaesthesiologists. Those included are faculty at a major academic center, resident physicians at the CA-1, CA-2, & CA-3 level.
-
What
The major component of the study looks at both personality type and communication styles. As such, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the DISC assessment will be employed. Descriptive statistics will be run to look for trends in search of the “average” personality.
-
When
After collecting baseline data, participants in the CA-1 cohort will be followed and retested halfway through and at the end of their training. The aim is to see if a statistically significant portion of the cohort changes personality to align with the mean of the faculty over time.
Methods
The Myers-Bringgs Type Indicator
This test looks at individuals preference for judgement, thinking or feeling, and perception, intuition or sensing. It also considers the attitude of each of these functions: introverted or extroverted - resulting in sixteen distinct personality types each with their own cognitive function stack which displays their preferences for interacting with the worlds and the people in it.
The DISC Assessment.
This test groups individuals into four communication styles: dominant, influential, compliant, and steady. The D and I types tend to be more big-picture oriented and the D and C types tend to be task driven.
This study is ACTIVE.
